Editor's Notes

  • #3: Using the term multiple times in a variety of correct context, and over an extended period of time ensures enduring understanding of vocabulary terms. From the 2008 Improving Adolescent Literacy Guide, research validates that it takes 17 exposures to learn a new word and in order to be most affective, that should be taught over an extended period of time. The more exposure within the correct context, the better.
  • #4: Morphology is understanding the meaning of word parts. When students know that words are broken into parts and that each part, especially medical terms, has a meaning, it helps students significantly in recognition, retention and correct use of the terms. When terms are broken into parts, it makes a huge, long word easy to understand.
  • #5: Students make sense of the word on their own…this provides the opportunity of ownership of their individual learning. Of course, it is your responsibility to make certain that students have the definition correct.
  • #6: This helps English language learners and those who are more visual in their learning. And the picture or graphic does not need to be a work of art…this provides the ‘stickiness’ needed so students can remember…
  • #7: This is the Vocabulary Organizer developed for Job Corps and explained in chapter 6 of the Guide to Standards-based Instruction for Job Corps. Expecting students to maintain a Certification Notebook with a section for Trade Vocabulary will be invaluable. As their knowledge-base increases, they can make adjustments to their vocabulary organizers. The vocabulary organizer has room for two words on each page. And it is divided like this: Upper left is the vocabulary term and phonetic punctuation that makes sense to the student. Upper right is a place for those prefixes and suffixes and their meanings Lower left is where an accurate definition is placed. After discussion of the word and morphology, help students develop a definition of the word. Lower right is for a picture that makes sense to the student or perhaps a diagram or chart that you give them. The most important thing that you as a teacher can do is to take the time to develop the vocabulary organizer. Failing to complete the organizer will add to your frustration which will translate to students not completely understanding and not sensing the importance of using the organizer.
